Dr Prescott, hair transplantation specialist
For over 20 years, Dr. Prescott has been performing hair transplantations in his Joliette and Montréal clinics. The leading cause of hair loss in both men and women is alopecia, a condition known as male, or hormonal pattern baldness. Hair loss is often hereditary. Nowadays, however, men as well as women choose the capillary graft procedure, in full confidence.
Hair transplantation
Hair loss happens when susceptible hair follicles or roots are too sensitive to male hormones. Fortunately, not all hair is as sensitive. The back and side (donor areas) of the head are not affected by male hormones and hair loss, implying that transplanted hair maintain its original renewal characteristics. That is why relocating follicular units from this donor area to the bald spots has lasting results.
Act quickly
An early transplantation allows concealment of the surgery with original hair that lasts. In addition, patients can opt for progressive grafting over several years, if necessary.
Surgical hair transplantation
The transplantation of follicular units can take 3 to 4 hours and involves the following steps:
- Local anaesthesia is done using a ”Dermajet” (a high pressure, needleless, automatic injector). This first step, which takes only 5 to 10 minutes, is the only one of the entire process that can be slightly uncomfortable.
- Harvesting consists of removing 2 to 6 narrow strips of hair from the donor area. These strips are then dissected in smaller pieces called minigrafts.
- Transplantation of follicular units relocates grafts into minuscule incisions made in recipient areas. The procedure may include 2 500 to 3 000 grafts per session.
- Return to work is possible the day following the procedure in most cases; however, for the first 10 days following the hair transplantation, it is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise (including team sports).
